Chocolate

Who knows what it feels like to have only
one piece of chocolate to eat in a day?
What it tastes when you put it
whole into your mouth
but suck on it, crunch it, bit by bit
and then, in truth,
run your choc-coated tongue,
gooey with saliva, all along your gums?
Wouldn't this smack like the best treat in the world?
You sure wouldn't want to miss the powerful aftertaste
as you delay the drinking of water cold,
as this would irremediably wash off the paste,
the earthy, warm, which-can-discombobulate,
musky, dizzying savour of the chocolate.
Only those whose throat burns when off to bed they go,
Only those whose fridge's whiteness is all aglow,
Only those who did keen hunger undergo
the real taste of chocolate know.
